Supporting Homeless Veterans

Press Release

Date: Dec. 10, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Veterans

U.S. Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod (CA-35) released the following statement after voting in support of HR 1402, reauthorizing funding for the Veterans Administration (VA) housing programs for homeless veterans:

"Like the nation, homelessness among veterans is a serious problem in the Inland Empire region of California," said Negrete McLeod. "The district I represent is home to over 20,000 veterans. It will take a continued coordination between the VA and local organizations to ensure that veterans are able to take advantage of housing assistance programs in and around the area."

This past August, Negrete McLeod hosted a field hearing on Veterans' issues in the City of Fontana. The issue of homelessness was one of the top concerns amongst veteran groups at the hearing. The VA and local organizations at the field hearing also assisted veterans in applying for VA benefits. Over 200 veterans attended.

"This is a great example of better coordination in helping our veterans. Today's vote on this important legislation is a step in the right direction, but more work remains to be accomplished." explained Negrete McLeod.

Bill HR 1402 passed the House and will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.
